George R.R. Martin is an American author best known for A Song of Ice and Fire, the epic fantasy series adapted by HBO as Game of Thrones and its prequel House of the Dragon.

His other work spans decades of science fiction and fantasy, and he received the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement in 2012.

Born in Bayonne, New Jersey in 1948, he studied journalism at Northwestern University before turning to fiction.
